Getting started

Build a dynamic segment

A segment is a saved audience that recalculates itself. Define it once with rules and reuse it in every campaign and automation — membership updates automatically as contacts change.

What you'll need

  • Imported contacts with useful attributes
  • Optionally, product events sent via the API for behavioral rules

Create the segment

  1. 1

    Open Segments → “New segment”

Go to Segments in the sidebar and create a new one.

  2. 2

    Name it clearly

Use a name you'll recognize later when picking an audience, e.g. “Active RU buyers, last 30 days”.

Add filter conditions

Combine attribute and behavior rules with AND/OR in the visual builder — no SQL required.

  • Attributes: country = RU, plan = pro, last_order_total ≥ 50.
  • Behavior: did / didn't trigger an event (purchase, opened, clicked) in the last N days.
  • Membership: is / isn't in a given list or another segment.

Preview and save

  1. 1

    Check the estimated size

Climails estimates how many contacts match and shows a sample so you can sanity-check the rules before saving.

  2. 2

    Save

The segment stays live: as contacts gain or lose the matching attributes/events, they enter or leave it automatically.

Need a frozen audience (e.g. for a one-off legal export)? Choose a snapshot segment instead of a live one.

Frequently asked questions

Do segments update in real time?

Live segments recalculate continuously as data changes; you can also force a recalculation from the segment's menu.

Can I segment on API events?

Yes. Events you send to /v1/events become available as behavioral conditions (e.g. “purchased in last 14 days”).

Can a segment exclude another segment?

Yes — use an “is not in segment/list” condition to subtract audiences.
