Email deliverability

Definition

Email deliverability is the ability of your messages to reach the recipient's inbox rather than the spam folder or being blocked entirely — measured by inbox placement, not just whether the message was accepted by the server.

Delivery vs deliverability

It's easy to confuse the two. Delivery (or the delivery rate) simply means the receiving server accepted the message instead of bouncing it. Deliverability goes further: it asks where the accepted mail actually landed — the inbox, the Promotions tab, or the spam folder.

A message can be 'delivered' and still never be seen, because the mailbox provider quietly filtered it to spam. That's why deliverability, not delivery, is the number that matters for results.

What drives deliverability

  • Authentication — valid SPF, DKIM and DMARC prove you are who you claim
  • Sender reputation — the trust score providers assign your domain and IP
  • Engagement — opens, clicks and replies tell providers people want your mail
  • List hygiene — low bounces and complaints keep reputation intact
  • Infrastructure — consistent volume, proper warm-up and clean sending IPs

How to improve deliverability

  • Authenticate every sending domain before you send at volume
  • Mail only people who opted in, and remove hard bounces immediately
  • Prune long-term non-openers so engagement signals stay strong
  • Keep a steady sending rhythm and warm up new IPs gradually
  • Monitor complaint and bounce rates and act the moment they rise

Frequently asked questions

What's a good deliverability rate?

Aim for inbox placement above 95% to engaged contacts. Anything materially lower usually points to authentication gaps, reputation damage or list-hygiene problems.

How is deliverability different from the delivery rate?

Delivery rate is the share of mail the server accepted; deliverability is the share that reached the inbox. You can have a 99% delivery rate and still land most mail in spam.

Who decides my deliverability?

Mailbox providers like Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo, based on your authentication, reputation and how recipients engage with — or complain about — your mail.
