Conversion rate
Email conversion rate is the percentage of recipients who completed the action a campaign was designed to drive — a purchase, signup or download — making it the metric most directly tied to revenue.
How conversion rate is calculated
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ emails delivered × 100, where a conversion is whatever goal you defined — a checkout, a signup, a booking. Some teams measure it against clicks instead of delivered mail to isolate landing-page performance; be explicit about the denominator so the number is comparable over time.
Because it tracks a real business outcome, conversion rate is the closest email metric to revenue — opens and clicks are only useful insofar as they lead here.
Conversion rate vs click rate
Click rate tells you the message got attention and the call-to-action was compelling enough to click. Conversion rate tells you whether that click turned into value. A high click rate with a low conversion rate points to a mismatch after the click — a slow, confusing or off-message landing page.
How to improve conversion rate
- Keep the promise: the landing page must deliver exactly what the email offered
- Reduce friction — fewer form fields, faster pages, one clear next step
- Segment so the offer genuinely fits who's receiving it
- Use a single, unambiguous call-to-action rather than competing options
- Test the whole path (subject → content → CTA → page), not just the email
Frequently asked questions
What's a good email conversion rate?
It varies enormously by industry, offer and audience. Benchmark against your own campaigns and segments over time rather than a universal figure — a well-targeted flow can convert far higher than a broadcast.
Should I measure conversions from delivered or clicked?
Both are valid — just be consistent. Against delivered mail it reflects whole-campaign impact; against clicks it isolates how well your landing page and offer close the deal.
Why is my click rate high but conversion low?
The email is working but the post-click experience isn't. Check that the landing page matches the email's promise, loads fast and makes the next step obvious.
