Click-to-open rate (CTOR)
Click-to-open rate is the percentage of recipients who clicked a link out of those who opened the email — isolating how compelling the content and call-to-action were, independent of the subject line or deliverability.
How CTOR is calculated
Click-to-open rate = unique clicks ÷ unique opens × 100. Because the denominator is opens rather than delivered mail, CTOR strips out the effect of the subject line and deliverability and asks a narrower question: once someone opened the message, did the content persuade them to click?
CTOR vs click-through rate
Click-through rate (CTR) is measured against everyone who received the email, so it blends deliverability, subject-line pull and content quality. CTOR looks only at openers, so it isolates content and CTA effectiveness. Use CTR to judge overall reach and CTOR to judge the message itself.
One caveat: open tracking has become noisy because privacy features auto-load pixels, which inflates opens and can distort CTOR. Read it as a directional signal, not an exact figure.
How to lift CTOR
- Make the primary call-to-action obvious and above the fold
- Keep the content scannable so the offer registers in seconds
- Ensure the body delivers on what the subject line promised
- Use one dominant CTA rather than diluting attention across many links
- Match content to the segment so it's relevant to who opened it
Frequently asked questions
Is CTOR better than click rate?
Neither is 'better' — they answer different questions. CTOR isolates content quality among openers; CTR measures whole-campaign performance. Track both for a complete picture.
What's a good CTOR?
It's typically higher than CTR because the denominator is smaller. Benchmark against your own history and segments rather than a universal number, and watch the trend.
Does Apple Mail Privacy Protection affect CTOR?
Yes — auto-loaded pixels inflate opens, lowering CTOR artificially. Treat it as directional and lean on clicks and conversions for hard measurement.
