What UTM parameters do
UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a URL. When someone clicks the link, your analytics reads those tags and attributes the visit to the exact source, medium and campaign you set — turning a vague 'direct' visit into 'spring newsletter, header button'.
- utm_source — where the traffic comes from (e.g. newsletter, facebook)
- utm_medium — the channel type (e.g. email, cpc, social)
- utm_campaign — the specific campaign (e.g. spring_sale)
- utm_content — distinguishes links in the same email (e.g. header_cta vs footer_link)
- utm_term — optional, usually for paid-search keywords
Tips for clean tracking
- Keep a consistent naming convention — lowercase, no spaces
- Reuse the same source/medium values so reports don't fragment
- Only tag external links you control; never tag internal navigation
- Use utm_content to A/B two buttons in one send
Frequently asked questions
Do UTM tags slow down or break my link?
No. They're standard query parameters appended to the URL. The page loads normally; your analytics simply reads the extra values.
Which parameters are required?
Best practice is source, medium and campaign together. Term and content are optional but useful for granularity.
Is this UTM builder free?
Yes, completely free with no signup. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
