Double opt-in
Double opt-in is a subscription method where a new contact must confirm their address by clicking a link in a verification email before they're added to your list — proving the address is real and truly consented.
How double opt-in works
Someone submits your signup form (that's the first opt-in). Instead of adding them straight away, you send a confirmation email with a unique link. Only when they click it (the second opt-in) do they join your list. If they never confirm, the address never enters your active audience.
Why it's worth the extra step
- Guarantees the address is valid and the mailbox exists — fewer bounces
- Filters out typos, fake addresses and bots at the door
- Documents explicit consent, which helps with GDPR and similar laws
- Builds a more engaged list, since confirmed subscribers actually want your mail
- Protects sender reputation by keeping spam traps and bad addresses out
Single vs double opt-in
Single opt-in adds contacts immediately with no confirmation — it grows a list faster but lets in bad addresses and unverified consent. Double opt-in trades a little top-line growth for a cleaner, higher-engagement list and stronger deliverability. For most senders the quality trade-off is worth it.
Frequently asked questions
Doesn't double opt-in shrink my list?
It reduces raw numbers because unconfirmed and fake addresses drop out — but those addresses never engaged anyway. The confirmed list performs better per message.
Is double opt-in legally required?
Not everywhere, but it's the cleanest way to prove consent. Some jurisdictions and providers strongly favour it, and it makes compliance far easier to demonstrate.
What if someone doesn't confirm?
They stay out of your active list. You can send a single reminder, but repeatedly mailing unconfirmed addresses undermines the point.
